The essays are based on the papers presented in a conference on ‘Cooperation and Partnership in the Mission of Church in the 21st Century’ held in Singapore in 2009.

The Singapore conversation took place amid huge volatility in the first decade of the new millennium: the 9/11 attacks, SARS outbreak, Indian Ocean tsunami, the Nargis cyclone, Mumbai terrorist attack, the H1N1 pandemic, and the still evolving global financial crisis. Perhaps for the first time since 1945, Asian churches can no longer rely on their Western counterparts to provide intellectual leadership and material support. This book offers a missiological reading on the fresh directions that Asian churches take amid radical social and ecclesial reconfigurations in the globalising age.

Table of Contents

Introduction — Michael Poon

Part One: Biblical and Historical Reflections
Chapter One Bible Readings
The Liturgical Context of Mission (Romans 15:14-19) — Simon Chan
A Minister’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) — Mark Chan
Conflict and Co-operation (Joshua 22) — Gordon Wong
A Cup of Water: Mission for Transformation (1 Kings 17:8-16) — Yu Chin Cheak

Chapter Two On Volatile Grounds: A History of Church Partnerships in Asia — Michael Poon

Part Two: Present-day Asian Churches: Realities and Challenges
Chapter Three Co-operation and Partnership in the Mission of the Church in China — Gao Feng
Responses
— Iman Santoso, Indonesia
— Masaki Makito, Japan

Chapter Four The Life and Witness of the Church in Myanmar: Past, Present and Future — Stephen Than Myint Oo
Responses
— Surakit Kamonrat, Thailand
— Bolly Lapok, Sarawak, Malaysia

Chapter Five Mizoram Presbyterian Church: Practice of Co-operation and Partnership — Zosangliana Colney
Responses
— Khamphone Kounthapanya, Laos
— Wee Boon Hup, Singapore

Part Three: Case Studies on Partnership
Chapter Six Short-Term Mission Trips
The School of Biblical Teaching and Short-Term Missions in India — Paul Swarup
A Case Study of the Lutheran Church in Singapore — Terry Kee
The Best Practices Document: A Guide for Foreigners to Vietnam — Pham Dinh Nhan Daniel

Chapter Seven Sharing of Resources
Forms of Partnership in Myanmar — Mar Gay Gyi
Compilation of the Khmer Indigenous Hymnal and Khmer Discipleship Manuals — Barnabas Mam
The Korea Research Institute for Missions — Steven Moon

Chapter Eight Leadership Formation and Training
Leadership Formation and Training in Malaysia — Tan Kong Beng
Partnership of Asian Churches in the Twenty-first Century: Theological Education and Asian Culture — Kan Baoping

Chapter Nine Migrant Workers
Chen Li Presbyterian Church Local Thai Mission: Reaching Out to the Thai Migrant Workers in Singapore — Phua Chee Seng

Chapter Ten Bible Translation
The Bontoc Scripture Society — Daphne Marie Falag-ey
The Bible Society of India: Partnership in Scripture Translation — G. Contributors to this Series are mainly drawn from those in senior Christian leadership in the region. The papers presented here have often benefited from discussion in the regional conferences organised by the Centre for the Study of Christianity in Asia.

This Series aims to encourage much-needed theological reflections by local Christian practitioners on their own mission experiences. The past few decades has witnessed two significant shifts that have impacted how world Christianity is interpreted. First, social sciences now provide the fundamental categories for understanding religious worlds. Philosophical and theological disciplines are often dismissed as ideologically motivated and so no longer occupy the central role they once assumed. Secondly, world Christianity is now studied by academics who may have little first-hand cross-cultural and missionary experience; and even with no Christian conviction. This represents a significant change from the time when career missionaries were the chief exponents of world Christianity. Stephen Neill, John V. Taylor, Max Warren and Andrew Walls were perhaps among the last missionaries in the post World War II era from the old school. Missiological studies so runs the risk of becoming increasingly theoretical and academic, with little understanding of ground realities. World Christianity is often described and explained in concepts that may be alien to the Christian community. To be sure, these newer forms of scholarship have enriched and challenged our understanding of present-day Christianity. However, Christians cannot abdicate their own theological task in striving for an account of their own faith and mission tasks in Christian terms. This we owe to the faithful and to the wider communities we serve.

This Series hopes to introduce what Southeast Asian Christians think to the wider audience, in the hope that this would contribute towards a more rigorous account of world Christianity.

Published:

No. 1 Daniel Koh and Kiem-Kiok Kwa, eds. Issues of Law and Justice in Singapore: Some Christian reflections (SGD 30)

No. 2 Michael Poon, ed. Christian Movements in Southeast Asia: A theological exploration (SGD 20)

The Anglican News Index (1961-1970)

The Anglican News (星马教声）was launched in 1961 as a monthly news magazine of the Chinese Board of the Diocese of Singapore and Malaya (圣公会星马教区华文工作委员会). On 2 January 1955 Chinese Churchmen (圣工).literally meaning "sacred work", was launched. It appeared more or less a quarterly magazine until the end of 1957, the eve of the "Great Leap Forward" in China.

This publication is not widely known nor available in public, however. Copies still survive in the China East (Huadong) Seminary in Shanghai, and in the Shanghai Municipal Library. It offers important insight on the life and work of the Chinese Anglicans in the beginnings of the post-denominational period in Chinese Christianity.

We are grateful to Miss Li Cuixiang for compiling the index. Funeral service is to be held on Thursday 10 April 2008.

The directions from Mei Foo <st1:stockticker>MTR</st1:stockticker> to his apartment were precise, as fitting for a historian. So Carl Smith welcomed me to his sanctuary eight years ago and unfolded to me horizons of Christian charity and ardent scholarship. His flat at Mei Foo was in truth a sanctuary, lined wall-to-wall and floor to ceiling with tomes of history and meticulously filed notes that silently witnessed to over forty years of devotion to the histories of South China, Macao and Hong Kong. The lunch with pan-fried fillet prepared by Dolly at that first visit celebrated the beginning of our friendship. Our common interest in Macao and Sheng Kung Hui’s history provided the occasion for many happy conversations in the following years. Carl would later unreservedly guide me to the worlds of archival studies and historiograhies. In God’s providence, Macao – the City of God, and Morrison Chapel – God’s acre in the Far East – would be the final stop of his earthly pilgrimage. Carl Smith is an exemplary gentleman, scholar, missionary and friend. With a pure and single heart he devoted himself to what God has entrusted him: towards preserving the histories of his adopted homes in the Far East.

He generously gave and enriched us all, for much he has received from God.

Good things and bad, life and death,
Poverty and wealth, come from the Lord.
The gift of the Lord endures for those who are godly,
And what he approves will have lasting success.
. . . .
Stand by our task and attend to it,
And grow old in your work. (Ecclesiasticus 11:14, 20)

May God grant his faithful servant eternal rest.

**

Carl Smith's favorite hymn: Jesus, I live to Thee, the loveliest and best

The Global South Anglican: its origins and development

This essay by Michael Poon examines the origins and development of “Global South Anglican”, and explores its ramifications for the Anglican Communion. The exploration sets its emergence in the context of internal ecclesiastical conflicts within the Episcopal Church and the Church of England. Disaffected clerics were instrumental in introducing “global South” geopolitics into the Communion debates. The essay calls into question the perceptions of churches in the South by Western interpreters, Philip Jenkins included. It ends by setting out the responsibilities facing Anglican churches in the Southern Hemisphere if they were to chart independently their own long-term welfare.

The Global South Anglican: its origins and development (in pdf);
Also available at Global South Anglican, http://www.globalsouthanglican.org/index.php/weblog/comments/the_global_south_anglican_its_origins_and_development_michael_nai_chiu_poon/

For other Anglican studies by the author, click here.

Southern Bell Index (1963-2000)

The Southern Bell (南钟), published in traditional Chinese script, chronicles what (ethnic) Chinese Methodists think and do in Malaysia (which before 1965, included Singapore). Guo Feng makes use of surviving liturgical books in China and prayer books (mainly Anglican) from outside of China in compiling two works: the Daily Office (meiri songdao [lit. Daily Praise and Prayer]); and the Pastor's Handbook (shizhu liangyou [lit. A Good Friend for Those serving the Lord]. In so doing, Guo in fact inherits the tasks in prayer-book translation that first begun in the early nineteenth century. He stands immediately in continuity with the work of Bishop Shen Yifan that came to a halt in the time of drastic changes from the 1950s to the end of the 1970s. Guo's translation of key phrases in the liturgy are important in shaping theological concepts in the present-day Chinese Church.

I am grateful to the Rev. Bishop Basil Robert commendation of this work in his Foreword was revealing of the ethos and priorities in the Diocese of Singapore in the time shortly before the Pacific War.
